1PPM IS LIKE ONE DROP OF MILK IN… 40 GALLONS OF COFFEE! NOW, THAT’S SMALL!

When you’re testing fluids, you’ve got to see what operators can’t. Concentration of elements is shown in parts per million (ppm). For comparison, 1 ppm is like:

  • One drop of milk into 40 gal. of coffee
  • A half teaspoon of milk into a pick-up bed of coffee
  • A half-gallon of milk in an Olympic-sized pool of coffee

Visual inspections can only reveal so much about the operating health of your equipment. Ongoing oil analysis helps you spot small problems long before they become costly repairs. For owners and operators interested in more in-depth details on their oil, there are additional testing options available:

  • Total Acid Number (TAN): TAN tests measure the buildup of acidic byproducts in your oil, which can lead to corrosion and premature wear of internal metallic components
  • Total Base Number (TBN): TBN tests measure your oil’s reserve alkalinity, and its ability to neutralize acidic components and prevent corrosion
  • Water (Karl Fischer Titration): Karl Fischer Titration tests measure the moisture in your oil. Water doesn’t act as a good lubricant, and even relatively small amounts can interfere with the oil’s ability to form a protective film between moving parts
