Operating along western North Dakota’s rolling hills, Wayne Wilson, owner of Wilson Construction, literally has seen his share of ups and downs. But, thanks to his Caterpillar® equipment, everything levels out in the end.

Wilson Construction, in business more than 40 years, is a general contractor with 11 employees. It offers grading services, gravel hauling and road construction.

Relying upon Butler Machinery for its equipment needs, Wilson Construction’s all-Cat® fleet consists of eight scrapers, three motor graders, three dozers, three loaders, three belly and two side dump trucks, an excavator/backhoe and a skid steer.

Currently, Wilson Construction employees depend on their Cat equipment to work on federally-funded oil industry-related projects in Bowman County including widening and grading roads for easier semitrailer access.

During the project, Wilson Construction, which annually moves 750,000 to 1 million yards of dirt, will move more than 500,000 yards of dirt.

“It’s been a good relationship,” Wilson said. “Their service is excellent.”

Helping them perform the work more efficiently, Butler Machinery representatives recently installed Trimble GPS systems in Wilson’s CAT 627G and 637 scrapers.

“I am excited about it,” Wilson said. “It is going to save a lot of time and money.”

Wilson noted if an equipment operator simply cut a 500-foot strip one foot too deep, equating to more than 1,500 yards, the mistake could easily cost him thousands of dollars.

“Having the technology in the cab, the operator will know exactly when to quit,” he said. “It should minimize the need for rework, if any.”

Also working together to minimize downtime, Wilson previously counted on Butler Machinery’s shuttle truck for its part needs. Now, thanks to Butler Machinery’s Dickinson location, parts are only an hour away.

“I can send someone to Dickinson in the morning and have our equipment up and running that same day,” Wilson said. “It is going to benefit us a lot. We’ll reduce downtime by at least half a day.”

In addition, Wilson anticipates greater savings with trucking fleet rentals and maintenance on his trucks’ Cat Engines.

“It’s going to be a lot handier,” he said.
